{"id":9545,"date":"2017-04-07T15:35:29","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T14:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thehighertempopress.com\/?p=9545"},"modified":"2017-04-07T16:02:30","modified_gmt":"2017-04-07T15:02:30","slug":"recreating-klopps-tactics-fm17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thehighertempopress.com\/2017\/04\/recreating-klopps-tactics-fm17\/","title":{"rendered":"Recreating Klopp&#8217;s Tactics in FM17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jurgen Klopp has been winning praise for the way he aims to be only the 3rd manager to take Liverpool into the top 4 within the last 10 years, but is it possible to replicate his \u201cheavy metal\u201d style of football in FM17?<\/p>\n<p>To work out how to implement this in Football Manager we first need to work out how Liverpool play in real-life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Lineup<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If we break down the Liverpool team into the various positions and appearances played this season it becomes quite apparent that Klopp firstly has a set formation and secondly has an established first team &#8211; which should help us quite significantly with re-creating Klopp&#8217;s tactics<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/CAtJucd.png\" width=\"475\" height=\"509\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So it looks like a pretty standard 4-3-3 with a back 4 of Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Milner with a midfield trio of Wijnaldum, Henderson and Lallana and finally Mane, Firmino and Coutinho as wingers\/striker.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Player Roles<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Defence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll start off analysing the defence &#8211; using details from Liverpool\u2019s recent 3-1 win in the Merseyside derby against Everton.<\/p>\n<p>As predicted by the graphic above, Liverpool played with Matip and Lovren as centre-backs with Milner at left-back and Clyne at right back.<\/p>\n<p>As we can see via Milner\u2019s heat map for the Everton game, he obviously (considering his real-life work-rate and delivery) plays in a very attacking role.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/v0fRojG.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"208\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via whoscored.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h6>\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/gfycat.com\/ifr\/UnripeSneakyApe\" width=\"640\" height=\"348\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/h6>\n<p>This is proven by the clip above, that shows just how quickly Milner bombs forward. There\u2019s only one role for both him and Clyne (who does the exact same role down the right as his heat-map below) &#8211; Complete Wing-Back<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 328px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/PbVn6fT.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"209\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via whoscored.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2 centre-backs are pretty generic so remain as centre-backs giving us a back 5 (including Mignolet) that looks something like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/WnF3twF.png\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Midfield<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, we\u2019ll analyse the midfield trio of Wijnaldum, Henderson and Lallana during their win against Tottenham back in February.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/D75fVIX.png\" width=\"871\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we see Lallana labelled up as 1 (these 3 will keep these numbers for the duration of the midfield analysis), Wijnaldum as number 2 and Henderson as number 3. Henderson predictably drops deeper as the most defensive of the 3, with Lallana playing so high he\u2019s almost as high up the pitch as Firmino, with Wijnaldum offering an option for a short pass behind the pressing Tottenham player.<\/p>\n<p>Within just 4 seconds we see a completely different picture:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/ifnfEnv.png\" width=\"875\" height=\"488\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Henderson drops even deeper to ensure defensive cover for the 2 centre-backs, this allows Wijnaldum to make an attacking run to the left-wing whilst Lallana stays in a central attacking midfield position. The attack fails and Milner (pictured at the bottom) plays the ball back to Mignolet in goal who plays the ball long. Within just 12 seconds all 3 players are back in their central positions ready for a turnover in possession.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/alI6HWK.png\" width=\"872\" height=\"476\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a typical scenario that is repeated time and time again in a similar pattern &#8211; Henderson is normally the deepest of the three, when not in possession the midfield is compact and works hard to track back and to press whoever is in possession &#8211; once the ball has bypassed the initial press from the front 3. So how do we recreate this exhausting style of football faithfully in FM?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/RHcbl9C.png\" width=\"338\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve opted for Lallana as a box to box midfielder on a support mentality, whilst Lallana is more offensively focused in real-life &#8211; having him on this setting will ensure he ventures up the pitch to help support the front 3, as well as having that defensive mentality to track back when needed.<\/p>\n<p>Wijnaldum gets put down as a ball-winning midfielder. Like Lallana, Wijnaldum isn\u2019t this defensive in real-life, but putting him as one in FM ensures the heavy pressing and support we need from our midfield.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson gets set to the regista role. Doing this should ensure he drops to be the most defensive of the trio whilst still helping the attack when needed. His work-rate should also mean he\u2019ll copy the defensive side of his game from real-life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The attacking trio of Firmino, Mane and Coutinho are luckily much easier to replicate in FM.<\/p>\n<p>As we can see right from kick-off during the Tottenham game, Coutinho (#2) immediately comes slightly central whilst Mane (#1) spreads wide.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/TaykaOb.png\" width=\"715\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Coutinho is renowned for his mazy dribbles into a central (usually ending in a shot) so therefore suits the role of inside forward (on an attack mentality) perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>Mane is a bit harder to decide a role for as he often cuts inside but also is more than happy to stay wide and deliver a cross. I\u2019ve opted for a generic winger role with attack mentality, hopefully, this will give him a bit of freedom to create havoc.<\/p>\n<p>Firmino is a bit easier, we want him chasing down everything &#8211; to either create chances for himself, or one of the supporting players or to panic the opposition defence into gifting us the ball back, therefore Firmino&#8217;s role is as a defensive forward.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/gfycat.com\/ifr\/ForkedAdmiredDassierat\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/eQt1si4.png\" width=\"375\" height=\"589\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Team Instructions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Klopp\u2019s teams are renowned for their quick counter-attacking ability and it\u2019s no different at Liverpool, as we can see from this clip against Tottenham<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/gfycat.com\/ifr\/FlickeringVapidJabiru\" width=\"640\" height=\"348\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Based on that I&#8217;ve opted for a \u201cCounter\u201d mentality as I believe that suits our midfield and roles best, whilst also being faithful to Klopp\u2019s philosophy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/BYy4dgU.png\" width=\"945\" height=\"710\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The team-shape is set to \u201cfluid\u201d to encourage movement both in attack and defence. The defensive line is pushed to \u201cslightly higher\u201d to allow our midfield to swamp the opposition midfield without giving them an outlet higher up the pitch (I did consider a very high defensive line here, but thought that may leave us too open, \u201cslightly higher\u201d should give a better balance).<\/p>\n<p>Our team is quick, aware and willing to run for the ball, so the \u201cpass into space\u201d TI should allow us to recreate that, allowing space to be created at ease.<\/p>\n<p>In attack we want our forwards to \u201cbe more expressive\u201d and to \u201cwork the ball into box\u201d &#8211; Klopp\u2019s teams rarely gamble on long-shots (bar Coutinho) so this should work a treat!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Player Instructions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most of what we want from our players is already defined from their roles, but there are a couple of exceptions. Firstly Coutinho as inside forward gets the \u201cshoot more often\u201d and \u201csit narrower\u201d PI added to accurately represent what he does within this particular system.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/hCDpRaA.png\" width=\"581\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lallana also gets a couple of PIs added, name \u201cmark tighter\u201d and \u201cmove into channels\u201d. Whilst we want him bombing all over the pitch, we also need him to stay tight to the opposition midfield to maintain that harmony in the middle of the pitch. We also want him to be joining up with Mane\/Coutinho on the flanks whenever possible to hopefully cause overloads that\u2019ll create chances.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/7H25t9o.png\" width=\"584\" height=\"215\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Opposition Instructions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The opposition instructions are set as above. We want to relentlessly close down every player on their team in order to force a turnover in possession. Key central positions (basically anywhere down the centre of the pitch) are set to tight marking to help the closing down in key areas. Players that are playing wide are forced to be shown onto their opposite side (so the right back is forced onto his left-foot when possible) this should force the opponent into playing the ball into a more central area, where we\u2019ll be able to hunt the ball down and hopefully retrieve it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/A0WH72d.png\" width=\"1303\" height=\"648\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Test<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So how did the tactic fare? In order to get a \u201cfair\u201d test, I simmed the same season 3 times using the above tactic and got the following results:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Test 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/oigd3vE.png\" width=\"464\" height=\"727\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A pretty impressive season! Firmino topped the goalscoring charts with 24 goals, Coutinho netted 11 and Mane 7 (with 15 assists). The play was good and I&#8217;d say very faithful to Klopp (as you can see in the footage below against Bournemouth). We only lost 6 league games all season (to Man City x2, Southampton, Tottenham, Man Utd and Watford)<\/p>\n<p>The virtual players also played just like their real-life counterparts with 5 out of the top 20 players in distance covered coming from Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p>Also worth a mention is this goal by Coutinho, which is just classic Coutinho.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/212134671\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Test 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cheavy-metal\u201d style of football obviously took it\u2019s toll during the second test, after going through the first 20 league games of the season with just one defeat (against Man City) there was an end of season collapse, culminating in narrow defeats to Everton, Bournemouth, Southampton and Chelsea within the last 10 games of the season. Amazingly Liverpool only conceded 23 goals this season, a fantastic record.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/hb0swZc.png\" width=\"460\" height=\"726\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Test 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most disappointing season so far, but still not terrible, especially considering we also reached the FA Cup Final.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/ZFJYoVC.png\" width=\"465\" height=\"711\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Summary<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall the tactic works superbly, sometimes struggles against the best teams in the league but that\u2019s somewhat to be expected and it\u2019s faithful to Klopp\u2019s philosophy, winner!
