Letou Decide: Mlog 25th January

It’s Thursday, which means as the players put in their hard yards on the training pitch, my mind is wandering to the issue of team selection for Saturday.

We’re playing Preston North End in the FA Cup fourth round, at the Liberty Stadium and with the majority of our first-choice team fit.

That all sounds like a recipe for success but football has a horrible and inevitable way of turning around kicking you south of Truth or Consequences.

I’d like to rest some players but there are some I really don’t want to rest. The partnership between van der Hoorn and Alfie Mawson needs time, as does the midfield duo of Renato Sanches and Tom Carroll. Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew can stay up front, with Wilfried Bony returning from injury in a week it’s expected one of them will drop out so getting game time now is important.

That all means the spine of the team is very strong. Out on the wings fans’ favourite Luciano Narsingh stays but Nathan Dyer is rested. I know he’s only played three games but after not featuring at all under Stuart Reid, he’s not exactly used to being a regular. Roque Mesa starts in his stead. At full back I’ve raided the Under-23’s and believe me, it’s slim pickings down there. It’s like looking through the menu at a Scottish restaurant. Not much in it and nothing you’d want. I’ve plucked out two young Welsh lads; Cian Harries on the left and Mael Davies at right back.

I’d like to give Fabianski a rest but who do I bring in? Here are the two options:
